Meals for Mamas will provide daily nutritious meals for women staying at Kay Manman Yo, Midwives for Haiti’s high-risk maternal waiting home. Women are identified in our rural community clinics and referred to us when they face complications such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, multiple pregnancies, a history of sexual assault, or clinical malnutrition. Kay Manman Yo gives these women a safe place to stay near skilled birth care, but many arrive hungry and undernourished. In Haiti, nearly half the population is acutely food insecure, and pregnant women are among the most vulnerable. Without adequate nutrition, mothers are at far greater risk for complications, and babies face higher rates of low birth weight, preterm delivery, and early death. Through this project, we will provide three healthy meals per day for every mother during her stay, about four weeks on average. Each meal is tailored to her specific condition, such as low sugar for gestational diabetes or added protein for those who are malnourished. Food is medicine, and in the next year we will serve approximately 132 women, providing more than 11,000 meals. The cost is less than 40 dollars per woman per week, approximately 6 dollars a day. This is a small investment with life-saving impact. For many of our patients, these are the most nourishing meals they will have all month. By meeting this basic need, we give women the strength to face childbirth, the ability to initiate breastfeeding, and the dignity of knowing they and their babies are valued.
