In Sierra Leone, a child’s future often depends on their ability to pass an English-language exam at the end of primary school. Yet for most children, English is not the language spoken at home. With 18 local languages across the country, limited access to trained teachers, and literacy rates remaining low, many students face significant barriers to education before they even have the opportunity to succeed. In some rural communities, there are no formal schools and only one literate person available to support learning. This fundraiser will help equip teachers with practical, phonics-based literacy tools and training that can be reproduced and used for years to come. By strengthening early literacy skills, we can empower children to succeed academically, open doors to future opportunities, and support lasting transformation within their communities.
